Embracing AI: A New Frontier for the Automotive Industry
As someone who has spent decades in automotive retail owning new and used car dealerships and pioneering approaches in everything from inventory management to customer experience, I’ve witnessed our industry evolve in extraordinary ways. The changes we’re now beginning to see, however, signal a transformation unlike any before—a transformation driven by artificial intelligence.
I’m excited to be contributing regularly to autoindustry.ai as we explore what AI means for the future of auto dealerships. The next 12 to 24 months will be critical, as AI begins to reshape every dealership department. AI will transition from ideas to reality in car dealerships. For those of us in the business, the promise of AI is more than just hype; it’s an opportunity to become more efficient, precise, and customer-focused than ever.
In the sales department, we’re already seeing AI applications in lead handling, customer profiling, and pricing strategies that align with consumer trends in real time. AI tools that analyze customer intent and follow up with personalized recommendations are enhancing the effectiveness of BDC/Sales teams. The service department is benefiting too, with predictive maintenance tools identifying potential issues before they become costly repairs. And in finance, AI-driven credit models are helping us make better lending decisions, often opening new pathways to ownership for customers who might not have qualified in the past.
But these are just the first steps. As we look further ahead, I believe robotics and advanced automation will work in tandem with AI to redefine our business models. In addition to automated reconditioning, we could soon see robots detailing vehicles inside and out with speed and precision that raises the bar on quality standards. Routine maintenance tasks like oil changes, tire rotations, brake checks, and even cosmetic inspections could all be handled by robotics, creating efficiencies that reduce wait times and increase service capacity. The potential for robotics to handle these repetitive tasks, while allowing our team members to focus on building meaningful customer relationships, could be transformative for our industry.
In my contributions to this newsletter, I plan to provide actionable insights on how AI will impact each department within a dealership, both in the near term and in the years to come. From optimizing inventory management to reimagining customer service, AI presents a future that’s full of possibility. I’m looking forward to sharing more on how we can embrace these advancements to build a smarter, more resilient automotive industry.
